The Chandigarh Chair is one of the most significant pieces of twentieth-century furniture design. Originally conceived in the 1950s by Pierre Jeanneret, working alongside Le Corbusier and Indian architects including Eulie Chowdhury, it was created to furnish the administrative buildings, courts, and residences of Chandigarh — India's first planned post-independence city.
Designed to be honest, economical, locally manufacturable, and suited to its environment, the chair embodies a philosophy of purposeful design. More than seven decades later, its distinctive form remains as relevant as ever, celebrated for its clarity, functionality, and enduring beauty.
The defining feature of the Chandigarh Chair is its iconic inverted V-shaped leg structure. Four flat teak members angle outward from the seat, creating a geometry that is both structurally efficient and instantly recognizable. The seat and back are hand-woven in natural cane, offering breathable comfort well suited to warm climates, while the broad arm extensions project forward in a gesture that feels welcoming without excess ornamentation.
Crafted from solid teak and faithful to the original proportions, Era's Chandigarh Chair is available in both natural teak and dark walnut finishes. Built in the spirit of its origin, it is a chair where craftsmanship serves purpose — a timeless design rooted in place, material, and tradition.
